문희상 국회의장이 1980년 광주민주화운동 참상 증언과 함께 ‘5·18 망언 의원 3인방’의 징계를 요구하며 지난 21일 자신에게 편지를 보낸 헌틀리·피터슨 부인에게 “한국의 민주주의가 진실의 역사를 바탕으로 발전할 수 있도록 책임지겠다”는 내용의 답장을 보냈다.

문 의장은 답장에서 “5·18을 생생하게 목격했던 당시의 일을 올바르게 묘사해줘서 감사하다”며 “광주시민의 고통을 더 이상 가중시켜서는 안 된다는 점에 전적으로 동의한다”고 적었다. 이어 “대한민국 국회의장으로서 우리나라를 위한 당신들의 진실성과 애정을 높이 평가하며 광주에서 희생된 많은 시민들의 고통과 손실을 치유하기 위해 진심으로 헌신하겠다”고 다짐했다. 문 의장은 “다시 한 번 당신들의 편지에 진심으로 감사하다”며 편지를 마쳤다. 다음은 문 의장이 헌틀리·피터슨 부인에게 보낸 답장 전문.

Dear Mrs. Martha Huntley and Mrs. Barbara Peterson,

I would like to thank you for your letter of February 21, 2019. I especially appreciate your right portrayal of what happened at the time as living witnesses to the history of May 18. I fully agree with you and the late Reverend Arnold Peterson and Reverend Charles Betts Huntley, may they rest in peace, that we must not further the pain of the people of Gwangju at the time.

As Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, I highly value your sincerity and affection for our country, and assure you that I am genuinely committed to healing the pain and loss of the many citizens who were sacrificed in Gwangju. Your appeal will most certainly be taken into consideration in the process.

Furthermore, I take it upon myself to ensure that Korea’s democracy will advance and mature based upon a history of truth. I look forward to your continued thoughts and prayers.

Once again, I extend to you my heartfelt appreciation for your letter.
