The city of Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, has built in lights into the asphalt of a pedestrian crossing in a school zone. The lights, activated by motion, were built to prevent traffic accidents and boost pedestrian safety. According to the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, only one out of every 10 South Korean drivers yield to pedestrians at designated pedestrian crossings, a stark contrast to countries like the US, Germany and France, where drivers instinctively stop at pedestrian crossings.
