Homeless people comprise roughly half of the deaths of people in Seoul with no next of kin. Last year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government began holding public funerals for people with no next of kin and for people receiving basic living expenses from the state, but with no official notices of death being issued, it’s difficult for the acquaintances of the deceased to attend. Also, a limited number of available funerals prevents many from receiving a proper wake. The photo shows a commemoration ceremony hosted by civic groups for 166 homeless people who didn’t get a funeral in front of Seoul Station. (Kim Jung-hyo, staff photographer)
