The leader of South Korea’s largest Buddhist sect has suggested holding a ceremony comprising both religious and secular communities at Panmunjom in the name of inter-Korean peace and officially ending the Korean War. The Venerable Wonhaeng, president of the Jogye Order or Buddhism, outlined such a plan during his New Year’s address at the Memorial Hall of Korean Buddhist History and Culture in Seoul on Jan. 15. He also proposed cooperative efforts to restore North Korea’s Jangan Temple and Yujom Temple, which were both destroyed during the Korean War.
